This line from Miss Clara’s prayer reminded me of the St. Peter’s sermon at Pentecost, where he quote the prophet Joel: “And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” I find it comforting on a personal level to know that St. Peter binds all of us together that call upon the name of the Lord. The sermon continues with a reminder of the mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through Jesus. St. Peter testifies that he personally witnessed the resurrection and announced that Jesus, who was crucified, is both Lord and savior. He invited all to repent and be baptized, and assured his listeners that the promise of God is for them, their children, and for all who are far off, for everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself. Then he implored his listeners to save themselves from their crooked generation. When we start to despair at the crookedness we see in the news, we can take some comfort that Peter felt the same way about his generation and yet the world is still turning. Today’s news stories will cease to fill the headlines and our newsfeeds, but the Word of God will stand forever. When we are in Christ, there’s hope that we can shine light into a dark world by doing justice, loving kindness, and walking humbly with God, so yes I pray: Raise up more that will call upon your name!!!
