I had fun with Lisa Nichol Hickman’s next suggestion from Writing in the Margins:
Down the side of the page of Geneses 1, write the letters of the alphabet from A to Z. Take a deep breath and let your mind wander to the far corners of creation. What are you grateful for that starts with the letter A? B? C? Continue through until you reach the letter Z.
I decided to stay focused on aspects of the creation story while praying the alphabet in this way. Lisa Nichol Hickman posted the following quote on her Writing in Margins Facebook page:
Praying the alphabet allows us to be thorough in our prayers because each letter conjures up something we might not otherwise have remembered
For me the word remembered was “unashamed.” I was stuck on the letter “u” and found myself reading through my dictionary as a desperate measure (after reading through the creation story a number of times.) The word “unashamed” jumped off the pages of my dictionary to me. It’s kind of hard to remember this, but before the fall, Adam and Eve were unashamed before God. Christ’s death on the cross is an invitation to return to that same state of total and complete grace.
