I love the positive, confident energy of Isaiah 61. Matter of fact, if I could pick super powers, I might just choose to be Super Isaiah! How cool would it be to be anointed with the power to bring good news to the poor, bind up the brokenhearted, give liberty to captives, and comfort those who mourn!
But I find myself protesting just a little: It’s not such a simple thing to bind up the brokenhearted. There really aren’t Band-Aids for heartache. Comforting those who mourn is not accomplished with declarations, but rather through patient journeys. Mourning is a process that takes time and it is not always clear when it’s ok to feel normal again. The blessing and promise that I read in the verse is that joy breaks through and in time God will set all things right.
